Marty Gane has over 40 years of experience designing, operating, and escorting study tours for numerous clients including the Smithsonian Travel Program and National Geographic Expeditions. Since 1979, she has led educational groups to many corners of the world: from the Himalayas to the Great Barrier Reef; from the archaeological wonders of Greece and Egypt to the Anazasi ruins of the American Southwest. She designed two very special itineraries for the Smithsonian: an Atlantic crossing aboard the tall ship Sea Cloud in commemoration of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' 1492 voyage; and a 7-day "university at sea" cruising the Aegean Islands in partnership with Oxford University.
In 2006, Marty established her own company, South Mountain Expeditions. South Mountain operates 3-5 history tours each year in the U.S. and overseas. Popular tours have included "Attack on Pearl Harbor," "Normandy to the Rhine River," "Sherman's March Through Georgia," "The Battle of Little Bighorn," and "Greece, featuring the WWII Battle of Crete." In 2014, Marty acquired Civil War Tours, a company that has offered in-depth tours of our nation's most significant battlefields since 1999. A native Washingtonian, Marty received a degree in Greek Classics at the University of Virginia. A civil war buff, Marty resides in the shadow of South Mountain just down the road from Antietam Battlefield.
